The tax savings generally provide a reduction in the monthly cost for the employees' health insurance by allowing the employer to establish a Health Reimbursement Arrangement (HRA). Through the HRA Plan the employee's individual major medical insurance premiums may be reimbursed. The HRA funds are nontaxable to the employee.

What Are Health Reimbursement Arrangements (HRA)?

An HRA is a tax favored health plan offered by the employer. As of 2006, new tax legislation allows for an employer to reimburse 100% tax deductible dollars towards an employee's health insurance premiums by setting up an HRA. The dollars that the employer deposits into the HRA are tax-free to the employee. The employer has the option to reimburse all or part of the employees' health care premiums. If employer reimbursements are made, the employee is responsible to pay the balance by setting up a Health Savings Account (HSA).

An HSA is a tax favored savings account designed specifically to cover medical expenses not covered by your major medical, dental or vision plan.
